Redstone is an interesting part of Minecraft as you are no doubt aware, it can be used for anything from opening a door to storing data, but, believe it or not, it works on 1 simple principle: Powering a Redstone torch turns it off.

This is called a NOT gate it basically inverts the signal of the wire, just look at logic gates for more detail of how this is helpful, using this alone you can make a set of double doors!

AND gate

As it’s name suggests this will only give an output if both inputs are on. You can use the NOT gate to make it a NAND gate if you wish!

Now the sharper-eyed of you will see this is just 3 NOT gates, and that it is! I told you this was all built on that principle I mentioned at the start.

You may be asking “But what can I do with this knowledge?” Well here are a few ideas to get you started!

With this set-up, the pad will only work if the lever is also on!

This dispenser will work 8 time before the wire burns out, try and work out why!

Once the pad is pressed it is 'stuck' on, causing a 1 use dispenser

    Wait a second. A NOT gate has exactly one input and one output. A NAND gate has two inputs. There is absolutely no way to build a NAND gate out of any number of NOT gates.

    That’s why the basic building block is NAND and not NOT.

    I don’t know Minecraft, so I cannot tell whether your terminology is wrong or whether those redstones are NANDs (or NORs).

    PS: And I am not sure if the blogs without downvotes and without other mechanics to catch elementary flows in articles is a good idea.

    Urks, this posting is even worse: The image labeled “Now the sharper-eyed of you will see this is just 3 NOT gates” is not showing a NAND but an AND (false x false = false).

    Looking at the pictures more closely, Minecraft obviously supports implicit OR gates. That is, violating the rule “never ever connect two outputs”.

    So what you have actually done is to build an AND gate out of 3 NOT gates and an OR gate.

    Zirk, I apologise for not being so specific but the way Minecraft uses logic gates removes the need for OR gates and therefore a NOT gate can have up to 4 inputs. You can make a isolated OR gate which I will explain if I make a second tutorial which will cover clocks and pulse limmiters too.
